Is a Certificate IV in WHS worth it?
For anyone who holds or wants safety responsibility, it is the standard entry qualification employers look for, the recognised prerequisite for a Queensland WHSO licence, and the base for the Diploma of WHS. Advertised salaries for the roles it leads to are shown above. Whether it is worth it for you depends on your goals; a course advisor will give you a straight answer.
How long does it take to complete?
The course is self-paced. Motivated students have completed in four to five months; most complete within six to twelve. All students receive up to 18 months of access, with free extension beyond that if needed.
How much does it cost?
Launch tuition is $1,995: $1,500 on enrolment and $495 on completion of your first unit, or at 90 days, whichever is earlier. Afterpay Pay in 4 is available at checkout: the $1,500 enrolment payment becomes four fortnightly payments of $375, interest free, subject to Afterpay approval. Is the qualification nationally recognised?
Yes. BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is recognised throughout Australia under the Australian Qualifications Framework. FMS Training is a registered training organisation, RTO 45189, and this qualification is within its scope of registration.
I already work in safety. Can I get credit for experience?
Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning maps your experience and any related units against the qualification, so that you study only what is outstanding. It is available from $1,395, with an outcome within 14 days of your complete evidence portfolio, or within 7 days on the $350 fast track. Start with the free RPL eligibility assessment on this page for an indicative result now; a course advisor confirms it within one business day, at no cost and with no obligation. Once you are ready, payment of the assessment fee opens your online portfolio, where you complete the application, upload evidence for each unit and send the referee report link. You can read how it works, step by step, on our Recognition of Prior Learning page.
Does this qualification lead to the Queensland WHSO licence?
BSB41419 is the recognised prerequisite qualification for applying for a Workplace Health and Safety Officer licence through Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. Licence applications are made to the regulator and are subject to its requirements.
Can I progress to higher qualifications afterwards?
Yes. The Certificate IV is the standard pathway into the BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety, and into more senior roles including advisor and manager positions.
What if I change my mind, or need more time?
Withdraw before commencing your first unit and your tuition is refunded in full. Once enrolled, reassessment and extensions beyond 18 months carry no additional fee. The $495 balance is not due until after your first unit.
When do I receive my certificate?
Your certificate and statement of results are issued within 48 hours of your final assessment being marked successful. Both are nationally recognised documents.
Is Psychological First Aid only for emergency services?
No. The unit has no entry requirements and no industry restriction. Serious incidents, workplace violence and distressing events occur in every industry, and Australia’s psychosocial hazard laws make responding to them every employer’s responsibility. Every workplace needs several people who can step in when a colleague is in distress, not one designated person.
Is training on its own enough to manage psychosocial risk?
No. Under Australia’s psychosocial codes of practice, training supports a broader strategy: good work design, consultation and proper controls come first. Education is what turns a policy on paper into people who notice, respond and speak up, and training several people rather than one is how psychological safety becomes part of how a workplace runs.
What career opportunities does this qualification open?
Work health and safety roles exist in virtually every Australian industry, from construction, mining and logistics to healthcare, manufacturing and corporate services: safety officer, coordinator, advisor, compliance and risk roles, with pathways into management and consulting. Regulatory requirements under the Work Health and Safety Act continue to grow, and safety expertise remains human-led. Completing a qualification does not guarantee employment.
Where can I read the student handbook?
The FMS Training Student Handbook sets out enrolment terms, support, complaints and appeals, and the refund policy.
Can my employer pay?
Yes. We invoice organisations directly, enrol groups, and provide progress visibility on request. Request a corporate enrolment through the course guide form and a course advisor will be in touch.
