Nationally Recognised Mental Health First Aid for Supervisors: PUARCV001 or 11379NAT? (2026)

Is there a nationally recognised mental health first aid course for supervisors? Yes, there are two: PUARCV001 Provide psychological first aid, and the 11379NAT Course in Initial Response to a Mental Health Crisis. FMS Training (RTO 45189) delivers PUARCV001 for $610 per person, online and self-paced so team leaders can fit it around shifts, or onsite at your workplace for a group. Each person assessed competent gets their own Statement of Attainment, which an employer, insurer or auditor can check. Phone 1300 699 150.

The short answer for employers

  • Both options are nationally recognised. Each is listed on training.gov.au and must be delivered and assessed by a registered training organisation that has it on its scope.
  • PUARCV001 is a unit of competency from the Public Safety Training Package. It covers giving immediate, practical support to someone who is distressed, and referring them to the right help.
  • 11379NAT is an accredited course (its unit is NAT11379001 Identify and respond to mental health crisis situations). Providers we checked deliver it as a one-day, face-to-face class.
  • The provider’s own mental health first aid accreditation (valid for three years) is a different thing: it is that organisation’s credential, not a unit on the national register.
  • The deciding question for a supervisor group is usually delivery: can your team leaders all get to a classroom on the same day, or do they need to do it online around their shifts?

Which one should my supervisors do?

Start with the words in the requirement. If your insurer, client or policy says “nationally recognised”, either code satisfies it, so pick the one your team can actually complete. If it names a specific provider’s accreditation, ask whether a nationally recognised unit is acceptable instead.

For logistics, manufacturing, construction and other shift-based workplaces, getting every team leader off the floor on the same day is often the hard part. PUARCV001 online lets each supervisor complete it on their own roster, and the workplace still ends up with every name on the national record. For a group at one site, FMS Training can deliver it onsite so the scenarios match your own work.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Is the code on training.gov.au, and is it on the provider’s scope?
  2. Will each person receive a Statement of Attainment in their own name?
  3. Can it be done online, onsite or only in a classroom?
  4. What does the price include for a group, and are there travel costs?
Training is one control, not the whole duty. Under the Queensland Managing the risk of psychosocial hazards at work Code of Practice, businesses must identify psychosocial hazards, assess the risks, put controls in place and review them. No law names a particular course. Trained supervisors support that work; they do not replace it. See our guide to managing psychosocial hazards and your legal requirements.
