How Long Does a Confined Space Ticket Last in Queensland? (2026)

Quick answer: In Queensland a confined space ticket (a Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised unit RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces) has no expiry date set by law. Queensland’s Confined Spaces Code of Practice 2021 says refresher training should be provided “as appropriate for a particular workplace”, depending on how often workers enter or work in confined spaces. So your employer and the site decide how often. At FMS Training in Brisbane the confined space course is $310 (theory online, then a half-day practical at Lawnton). If you already hold RIIWHS202E or the equivalent earlier unit RIIWHS202D, the refresher is the same price as the full course, $310 per person. RTO 45189.

How long does a confined space ticket last in Queensland?

Your Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS202E does not expire. It records that you were assessed as competent. What can go out of date is your currency: whether your employer or a site accepts that your skills are still up to date. That decision sits with the workplace, not with a fixed government date.

What the law and the Code of Practice actually say

  • The duty is on the employer. Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld), a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must provide, so far as is reasonably practicable, the information, training, instruction or supervision needed to protect people from risks arising from the work.
  • Training must be suitable and adequate. The Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) requires that training be suitable and adequate for the nature of the work, the risks and the control measures in place.
  • Refreshers depend on the workplace. The Confined Spaces Code of Practice 2021 (section 1.4) says: “Retraining or refresher training should be provided as appropriate for a particular workplace. The frequency of this training should depend on how often workers are required to carry out tasks associated with entry to or work in confined spaces.”
  • Records are kept for two years. The same Code says records of all training provided to workers for confined space work must be kept for two years.

You may see claims that WorkSafe recommends a refresher every two or three years. We could not find a set interval in Queensland’s Confined Spaces Code of Practice 2021: it leaves the frequency to the workplace. Sites often set their own rule, so always check your site induction requirements before you turn up.

When should you do a refresher?

  • Your employer’s policy or the site’s induction rules require it.
  • You have not entered a confined space for a long time, so your skills may not be current.
  • Your equipment, gas detectors, permit system or rescue arrangements have changed.
  • After an incident or near miss.

Can I do the refresher?

Yes, if you hold a Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS202E or the equivalent earlier unit RIIWHS202D (as listed on training.gov.au), whenever it was issued. To enrol you need the Statement of Attainment from a registered training organisation, photo ID and your Unique Student Identifier (USI). Wallet cards are not accepted unless they meet the requirements for a Statement of Attainment; a USI transcript must show its QR verification code. If you have never held RIIWHS202E or RIIWHS202D, or can’t find your Statement of Attainment, do the full course ($310).

Does a confined space ticket from another state work in Queensland?

Yes. RIIWHS202E is a national unit, so a Statement of Attainment issued anywhere in Australia is recognised in Queensland. Your employer’s or site’s refresher rule still applies.
