How long does a forklift licence last in Queensland?

Forklift Training

A forklift High Risk Work Licence in Queensland is valid for five years. You’ll receive a renewal notice from WorkSafe Queensland before it expires.

Although the licence itself lasts five years, many employers recommend refresher training every 1-2 years to keep your skills sharp. FMS Training offers refresher and corporate training options to help workers and businesses stay safe and compliant.

How do I renew my forklift licence?

Renewal is handled by WorkSafe Queensland, not your training provider. You will be sent a renewal notice before your five years are up, and you can renew online through WorkSafe Queensland — there is no need to re-sit training or assessment as long as you renew on time.

The catch: if your licence has been expired for more than 12 months, you generally cannot simply renew it. You will need to requalify, which means completing the training and assessment again — so it pays to act on that renewal notice when it arrives.

Renewal, refresher training and VOC — what’s the difference?

  • Renewal — the licence itself, renewed with WorkSafe Queensland every five years.
  • Refresher training — an optional skills update many employers recommend every 1–2 years; it does not change your licence.
  • Verification of Competency (VOC) — a formal check that you can still operate safely, often required by employers or work sites even when your licence is current.

FMS Training delivers refresher training and Verifications of Competency for individuals and businesses, so if your workplace has asked for either, we can help.
