Forklift Licence Renewal QLD — Expired Licence? Here’s What to Do

Last updated: June 2026

TL;DR: A Queensland forklift (LF) licence is valid for 5 years. To renew, you apply to WorkSafe Queensland and pay the $99.63 renewal fee — no re-training needed. If your licence has already expired, you have a 12-month grace window to still renew it administratively. Let it lapse more than 12 months and you must re-train and be re-assessed with a Registered Training Organisation before you can apply again. WorkSafe sends a renewal notice about 4–6 weeks before expiry.

Forklift licences don’t last forever, and the rules change depending on whether yours is still current, recently expired, or long expired. Here’s exactly where you stand.

Your forklift licence is valid for 5 years

Every high-risk work (HRW) licence in Queensland — including the forklift LF class — runs for 5 years from issue. WorkSafe Queensland posts a renewal notice roughly 4–6 weeks before your expiry date, but it’s your responsibility to renew on time even if the notice doesn’t reach you (so keep your address up to date with WorkSafe).

Scenario 1 — Your licence is still current

This is the easy path. Renewing a current licence is an administrative process — no course, no re-assessment:

  1. Apply to WorkSafe Queensland to renew, online through the high-risk work licence portal or in person.
  2. Provide photo identification.
  3. Pay the $99.63 renewal fee (current rate, re-indexed each 1 July).

Your renewed licence runs for another 5 years. Renew before the expiry date wherever possible.

Scenario 2 — Your licence expired less than 12 months ago

You’re still in the grace window. Queensland lets you renew an expired HRW licence for up to 12 months after the expiry date — still administratively, without re-training — unless there are extenuating circumstances. The process and the $99.63 fee are the same as a current renewal.

Important: an expired licence is not a valid licence. Even within the 12-month window, you cannot legally operate a forklift at work until the renewal is granted. Renew as soon as you can.

Scenario 3 — Your licence expired more than 12 months ago

Once a licence has been expired for more than 12 months, it can no longer be renewed. To get back on a forklift legally, you start the licensing pathway again:

  1. Enrol with a Registered Training Organisation and complete the forklift unit TLILIC0003 again.
  2. Pass the national assessment on a real forklift.
  3. Apply to WorkSafe Queensland for a new LF licence within 60 days, paying the $109.71 application fee.

At FMS Training this re-training is a one-day course at our Lawnton yard or on site for groups. See forklift course dates →

“Refresher” and VOC vs an actual renewal — don’t confuse them

Two things people often mix up with renewal:

  • A Verification of Competency (VOC) is an employer-driven check that you’re still competent to operate — often required when starting a new job or returning after time off. It is not a licence renewal and doesn’t change your WorkSafe expiry date. More on VOC →
  • A refresher course rebuilds your skills and confidence if you’ve been away from forklifts for a while. Useful before a re-assessment, but again, not the same as renewing your licence with WorkSafe. More on the refresher course →

If your licence is current or expired ≤12 months, you renew directly with WorkSafe — you don’t need either of these to do that.

Quick decision guide

Your situation What you do Re-training?
Licence still valid Renew with WorkSafe ($99.63) No
Expired ≤ 12 months Renew with WorkSafe ($99.63), but don’t operate until granted No
Expired > 12 months Re-train (TLILIC0003) + re-assess, then apply as new ($109.71) Yes
Starting a new job / returning Employer may require a VOC VOC, not a renewal

Frequently asked questions

How do I renew my forklift licence in Queensland? If your licence is current — or expired by less than 12 months — you renew directly with WorkSafe Queensland and pay the $99.63 renewal fee. No course or re-assessment is required. WorkSafe sends a renewal notice about 4–6 weeks before expiry.

My forklift licence has expired — can I still renew it? Yes, if it expired less than 12 months ago. You can renew administratively with WorkSafe Queensland within that 12-month window. But you can’t legally operate a forklift until the renewal is granted.

What if my forklift licence expired more than 12 months ago? It can no longer be renewed. You must re-train (complete TLILIC0003 again), pass the national assessment, and apply to WorkSafe Queensland for a new LF licence, paying the $109.71 application fee.

How much does it cost to renew a forklift licence in QLD? WorkSafe Queensland charges $99.63 to renew a high-risk work licence (current rate, re-indexed each July). If you’ve lapsed past 12 months and need a new licence, the application fee is $109.71 plus the cost of re-training.

How long is a forklift licence valid in Queensland? Five years from issue. It’s recognised in every Australian state and territory.

Is a VOC the same as renewing my licence? No. A Verification of Competency is an employer’s check that you’re still competent — often for a new job. It doesn’t renew your licence or change your WorkSafe expiry date.

Can I drive a forklift while my renewal is being processed? Only if your licence has not yet expired. Once it has expired you must wait until the renewal is granted, even inside the 12-month window.
