How Long Does Cert IV WHS Take, and Can You Do It in 5 Days?

Plan on about 12 months to finish the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419) if you are new to safety, or about 3 to 6 months if you already work in the industry. You have up to 18 months of access. A five-day class can cover the teaching, but the qualification is only finished when every unit has been assessed, and for most people that assessment work goes on well after day five.

How long it takes you depends on what you already know and how many hours a week you can give it. Here is how the time works out, what a “5-day Cert IV” usually means, and the questions to ask before you pay anyone.

How long it takes

The Australian Qualifications Framework sets the expected volume of learning for a Certificate IV at 0.5 to 2 years for someone who starts with none of the skills. Providers can deliver in more or less time than that, but they must be able to show why their students get there.

Your starting point Plan on
New to work health and safety About 12 months
Already working in the industry (safety rep, supervisor, coordinator) About 3 to 6 months
Years of safety work you can prove Recognition of prior learning may cover some or all units

These are planning figures for FMS Training’s self-paced online course, which gives you up to 18 months of access.

Can you do a Cert IV in WHS in 5 days?

You can attend a five-day class. Whether you leave with the qualification is a different question. The Certificate IV is made up of 10 units, and each one has to be assessed against the national standard before a certificate can be issued. In most short-course models the five days are the teaching, and the written assessments, workplace tasks and projects are completed afterwards, often over several more months.

Australia’s training regulator, ASQA, lists the quality and sufficiency of training as a risk priority, noting that “training delivery may not achieve intended skills outcomes if the training provided is insufficient”. A very short course is not automatically a bad course, but it should come with a clear explanation of what happens after the class.

Before you pay for any Cert IV in WHS, ask:

  • How much assessment is left to do after the class finishes, and how long do people usually take to submit it?
  • How long do I have to finish, and what does an extension cost?
  • Are there fees for resubmitting an assessment?
  • What is your RTO number, and is the course code on training.gov.au?
  • Who marks my work, and how quickly do I hear back?

What changes the time it takes you

  • Hours a week. The biggest factor. Steady hours every week beat a big week followed by nothing.
  • Your job. If you already handle incident reports, risk assessments or toolbox talks, much of the work will be familiar.
  • Recognition of prior learning. If you can show evidence of the skills from your work, some units may be recognised without retraining. It is assessed, not assumed.
  • Waiting time. Self-paced online study means no intake dates and no waiting for the next class.
